The Last Ice Bucket Challenge You Need To See — And You Really Should See It

The Last Ice Bucket Challenge You Need To See — And You Really Should See It ALS Awareness

This video definitely got the awareness part down , unfortunately it is because the person who made it is a long lived victim of it. I am really glad that the ice bucket challenge has been able to raise 13 million dollars to fight this disease and I am not gonna lie, pretty upset at some of my friends who did the challenge and not even mention ALS. This is my ALS awareness post because I still feel that people do not really know how terrible this disease is.

Two years ago my boyfriend’s mother passed away due to ALS. She was only diagnosed one year earlier. When we first found out about the disease we had no idea it existed. ALS is a neurological disease that affects the brain and spinal chord to produce motor neurons. These neurons help your brain have control of your muscle movement. ALS leads to the degeneration and death of these neurons which will eventually leave you paralyzed. But it also affects your ability to breath, swallow, and talk.

We were told that most cases could live up to 5 to 10 years but she only got one. Unfortunately his mom’s illness attacked her throat first making it hard for her to swallow and breathe. It spread rapidly and it’s just so awfully depressing to see someone who was so strong, healthy, loving, fast moving and independent to deteriorate so quickly. Within 5 months she couldn’t swallow anymore. Food and water became trapped in her lungs and she developed pneumonia. Within 7 months she could barely walk. And by a year she could barely speak but told me she wasn’t happy and wanted to die. Since your muscles deteriorate your nerves in your body are not cushioned by soft tissue any more so your whole body becomes immersed in pain. Eventually the pneumonia in her lungs suffocated her.

Seeing her and my boyfriend struggle through this has been the hardest obstacle I have ever had to face but nothing compared to what they had to endure. ALS has a low hereditary percentage but I still fear for my boyfriends health or our possible children’s . That’s why I am thanking everyone who donated and is spreading the word so we can hope this terrible disease can be cured. Thank you all!!!
